Dear Debbie,
I’m sorry to hear that things didn’t go well with the guy you were dating. You fell into a very common dating trap – the compatibility trap. This happens when you meet someone and have a lot of fun together and then assume that a long term committed relationship will work…but it doesn’t! Why didn’t it work? Because something… or many things that are essential to you were missing. What if you could have discovered this earlier? It’s important to be clear about where you are in your life. Dear Jason,

Thanks for sharing! Even if you are sure that you want a partner - you may encounter other roadblocks, and it looks like you’ve hit all of them below!

Some of us are so busy, rushing around so fast that we don’t even notice the people around us…and when we do see them, we don’t make the time to get to know them. I have a client who works 60 hour weeks, spends her free time with her women friends and at home, and just realized that if she wants a partner, she needs to make time for a partner. Does this sound familiar?

Not having time for a partner is a common roadblock to love in our busy, workaholic, multi-tasking society. If you want a partner, make finding one a priority. Make time to meet people, show up at events that interest you, make eye contact and connect with others, let your friends, family and coworkers know you’re looking, and use the internet to connect.

Another variation on this roadblock is when your road to love is blocked because there’s no room in your life for a partner. I have a few clients whose apartments are so cluttered with stuff they will never invite a date over. Does this sound like you? Make room for a partner in your life: clear your home of clutter, make your space inviting, and make your bedroom a sanctuary. Make room in your schedule, and room in your home and life for someone special.

Sometimes this means letting go of someone who is in your life, but is not your life partner. Maybe you are involved in a casual romance, maybe you’re pining over an ex-lover and longing to get back together, or maybe you’re dating someone who will never be a match for you. In this case, your heart is not open to the love you desire because it’s occupied with someone who is not your life partner. Your road to love is blocked because someone who is not your true love is occupying your heart! Does this sound familiar to you? Are you ready to muster up the courage to let them go? If you want love in your life, let go of whoever is filling up your heart so you can open your heart to true love.

Dear Sam,

It sounds like it’s high time for you to connect with others and build a support community. This means you can have people in your life who are there for you socially and emotionally, and who may help you find dates and even your life partner.

First, how about taking an inventory of those already in your life? Imagine yourself in the center of a circle. Those closest to you, we can call “Intimates”. They are in your inner circle, and you can rely on them in emergencies, tell them your whole truth, and share your joys and sorrows. Do you have any close friends or family members who fit in this inner circle?

Next imagine a circle just outside the inner circle. This is where your more casual friends are. These are the people you get together with to have fun and socialize. Who would you list in this category?

Finally, imagine an outer circle that would include other people you know as aquaintances. These could be neighbors, co-workers or colleagues - people who you know, but don’t get together with socially. Who would be in this category?

Now, it’s time to review your list. Are you satisfied with your support community? Do you ask for help and allow yourself to be supported? Are all your social and emotional needs met? Are you being supported in your life goals, including finding dates and a life partner?

So, we already know that you AREN”T satisfied with your current support community. What can you do about it? You can start by defining your ideal support community. How many people would you like in each of the circles? How would they support you and how would you “show up” for them?

Now, it’s time for you to be “the chooser”. This means you choose who goes in each circle and you choose who you bring into your life. You can move people to different circles and you can add new people to any of the circles.

What do you need to do to create the relationships you want? It sounds like you need to make time for these relationships to develop. How can you create more balance in your life to allow you to have the connections you want? How can you bring in more people that you’d really like to have in your life?

Dear Dr. Wendy,

I’m sure you are a skilled psychologist and that you could succesfully work with me on being more positive. However, what then? If you were also a matchmaker, that would answer that question. But you said you are not. So I don’t think you know any better than I do where to find quality single women in their 20s. Like I said before, I believe very, very few of them exist. I’m not interested in internet dating.

The pain of rejection is too intense (and frequent). I just have to try to find peace and happiness in life by myself. There are things I enjoy doing so I’ll focus on those things.

Dear Andy,

Thank you for your letter. First, I invite you to read it again, pretending it was written by a friend of yours. What advice might you have for that friend? Here are some things that you might find interesting to consider: What if your thoughts and beliefs had something to do with your experiences in life? What experience might someone have if he believed that there were very, very few quality women in their 20’s? What experience might someone have if he believed that the pain of rejection is too intense (and frequent) to risk trying to find the love he really wanted? What if you could change those thoughts and beliefs and experience what you really want in life?

I have worked with hundreds of singles, most of them in their 40’s and 50’s. Many have experienced divorces, single parenting, and countless heartaches and rejections. They are often discouraged and feeling hopeless when they start working with me. After working with me, they are always happier, clearer about their vision, much more optimistic about having what they want, and they have an effective plan to create both the life and love they desire. These people have gone on to lead happier lives, and to create satisfying relationships.

Many of my clients and workshop participants have been in their 60’s, a few in their 70’s and even 80’s. Sometimes they come in with a viewpoint that they missed their chance at love and it’s too late for them. They always leave with optimism and more confidence in themselves, and their ability to create what they want. From my perspective, as long as you are breathing, it’s never too late for love.

At 29, you are one of the youngest people who has wanted to work with me (I have worked with several 28-32 year olds, mostly women, and I was a college professor for many years working with 18-24 year olds). You are at the beginning of your adult life. What thoughts, beliefs and attitudes might assist you to create the life and loving relationship you desire? What might stop you from getting what you really want? Are you ready to give up before you’ve even gotten started?

You told me you were totally committed to creating a great relationship with someone who wants to build a life and family together and with whom you share a deep connection, honesty, integrity, attraction, laughter, outdoor activities, travel, open-mindedness, maturity and putting family first. Someone who is totally committed doesn’t give up on himself before he’s started. Someone who is totally committed does whatever it takes to create the life and love he wants.

I am ready to help you create your dreams. First, you can shift your mindset about the scarcity of quality women in their 20’s. How many partners are you looking for? Might there be one that could qualify among the many, many thousands of single women in the SF Bay area? Lucky for you, there are way more single women than men in their late 20’s and early 30’s who are ready for their life partner.

And, I have been doing some matchmaking lately, but only with people who have completed their relationship plans with me. Meanwhile, I agree that it is always wise to enjoy your life, and find peace and contentment in your days…while staying focused on your goals! It’s good to be clear about those goals, and committed to them. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
