Don’t despair. I have an antidote for the mope. In an article in today’s paper I’ve outlined a variety of suggestions for singles (see link below), and I’m offering a special Valentine’s coaching session (see info below). But first, here are some immediate tips for handling the day.

Dear Sam,

It sounds like it’s high time for you to connect with others and build a support community. This means you can have people in your life who are there for you socially and emotionally, and who may help you find dates and even your life partner.

First, how about taking an inventory of those already in your life? Imagine yourself in the center of a circle. Those closest to you, we can call “Intimates”. They are in your inner circle, and you can rely on them in emergencies, tell them your whole truth, and share your joys and sorrows. Do you have any close friends or family members who fit in this inner circle?

Next imagine a circle just outside the inner circle. This is where your more casual friends are. These are the people you get together with to have fun and socialize. Who would you list in this category?

Finally, imagine an outer circle that would include other people you know as aquaintances. These could be neighbors, co-workers or colleagues - people who you know, but don’t get together with socially. Who would be in this category?

Now, it’s time to review your list. Are you satisfied with your support community? Do you ask for help and allow yourself to be supported? Are all your social and emotional needs met? Are you being supported in your life goals, including finding dates and a life partner?

So, we already know that you AREN”T satisfied with your current support community. What can you do about it? You can start by defining your ideal support community. How many people would you like in each of the circles? How would they support you and how would you “show up” for them?

Now, it’s time for you to be “the chooser”. This means you choose who goes in each circle and you choose who you bring into your life. You can move people to different circles and you can add new people to any of the circles.

What do you need to do to create the relationships you want? It sounds like you need to make time for these relationships to develop. How can you create more balance in your life to allow you to have the connections you want? How can you bring in more people that you’d really like to have in your life?

Dear Dr. Wendy,

I’m sure you are a skilled psychologist and that you could succesfully work with me on being more positive. However, what then? If you were also a matchmaker, that would answer that question. But you said you are not. So I don’t think you know any better than I do where to find quality single women in their 20s. Like I said before, I believe very, very few of them exist. I’m not interested in internet dating.

The pain of rejection is too intense (and frequent). I just have to try to find peace and happiness in life by myself. There are things I enjoy doing so I’ll focus on those things.

Thank you for your letter. First, I invite you to read it again, pretending it was written by a friend of yours. What advice might you have for that friend? Here are some things that you might find interesting to consider: What if your thoughts and beliefs had something to do with your experiences in life? What experience might someone have if he believed that there were very, very few quality women in their 20’s? What experience might someone have if he believed that the pain of rejection is too intense (and frequent) to risk trying to find the love he really wanted? What if you could change those thoughts and beliefs and experience what you really want in life?

I have worked with hundreds of singles, most of them in their 40’s and 50’s. Many have experienced divorces, single parenting, and countless heartaches and rejections. They are often discouraged and feeling hopeless when they start working with me. After working with me, they are always happier, clearer about their vision, much more optimistic about having what they want, and they have an effective plan to create both the life and love they desire. Many of my clients and workshop participants have been in their 60’s, a few in their 70’s and even 80’s. Sometimes they come in with a viewpoint that they missed their chance at love and it’s too late for them. They always leave with optimism and more confidence in themselves, and their ability to create what they want. From my perspective, as long as you are breathing, it’s never too late for love.

At 29, you are one of the youngest people who has wanted to work with me (I have worked with several 28-32 year olds, mostly women, and I was a college professor for many years working with 18-24 year olds). I’m a 29 year old guy up in the Santa Rosa area. I was looking at the relationship success course, and wondering if it’s for men as well. I would tend to think that ocassionally people have linked up from the class itself? In any event I work on weeknights, so I couldn’t attend. I live in Santa Rosa, am a total catch in many ways, but am having an impossible time “finding love.” All my sister’s friends are taken. Anybody I’m attracted to who I see with any regularity (in a class, at Safeway, at the bank) is already taken. Online dating doesn’t work for me, as in every time I’m attracted to someone, they aren’t attacted back. I’m convinced online women are confused and don’t have their values/priorities in clear order, nor do they seem to have any patience, that is, either they consider you the “right type/look” RIGHT off the bat orelse, they’re not interested. I think I’m more attractive in person (although maybe everyone thinks that, right?) and I’ve had very attractive girlfriends in the past. But online dating just doesn’t work. I’m a little shy, don’t have the “killer instinct” to go up and talk to a woman out of the blue. I need a context of seeing her regularly and being able to chat regularly to even consider the idea of an “approach.” Anyway, it alls adds up to NOTHING for me lately. Since I can’t take the class due to the schedule conflict, is there any other way you can help me? I’m happy to pay if you really think you can help me.

Thanks so much for your letter. From everything I’ve heard, I agree you are probably a “catch” and I’d love to support you in your effort to be caught! You asked if men are welcome in my groups – absolutely! All my workshops and courses are for both men and women. And you’re right, many friendships have developed in my groups, but I do recommend that any serious dating of other group members wait until after the group is no longer meeting.

It sounds like you’ve been frustrated with meeting women and you’re ready to try something that works. Here is what I have seen work best with hundreds of singles: 1. hello dr wendy, thank you for your email. i do have a relationship question. i just left an abusive relationship after 8 years of marriage and was basically withheld in the relationship for a long time through manipulation and him not allowing me to take my children and leave. I have been so over him for a long time and just wanting to get out and unable to do so. i finally got out with my kids in january and filed for divorce. i have been going to stand meetings and regular therapy, but i feel great about moving on. do you think it is too soon to start looking. as iam so ready to move on with my life and meet someone who will treat me with respect and the way that i should be treated. i also wanted to ask you if you know of any singles groups for meetings and dances etc in the area? thank you and enjoy your day!

Dear Ann Marie,

Congratulations on having the courage to leave the abusive marriage you were in! You have shown your children that it was not acceptable for their father to control and manipulate you and them. Now both you and your children can choose to have kindness and respect in your interactions with each other and with those you invite into your lives.

You ask if I think it is too soon to “move on with your life.” It is certainly not too soon to express and release any residual anger, hurt or other feelings that may be there for you. It is also not too soon to deliberately choose warmth, kindness, compassion and respect in all your interactions with others. Nor is it too soon to meet men and have light, playful conversations and connections. However, it may very well be too soon to get involved in a long term committed relationship.

I highly recommend that you take the time to clarify your vision for the life and relationship that you want for yourself and your children. Then, please explore all your past romantic and non-romantic relationships so you can learn from any recurring patterns and become more conscious about future relationship choices. Then, you’ll want to distinguish between all the requirements that are essential for you to be happy in a relationship, and everything else that is negotiable. Finally, you’ll want to create an effective relationship plan, that includes where to scout, how to quickly sort and then screen potential partners (and be willing to say no if even one requirement is missing).
